Driving with a punctured tyre can be dangerous. The loss of tyre pressure can result in a loss of steering control, putting both yourself and other cars around you at risk. Additionally, there are further risks involved when changing the tyres on the roadside or while waiting for assistance from mechanics.
When it comes to changing flat tyres, here is a guide on how to do it:
1. Safety First
- Park in a safe, flat area away from traffic.
- Engage the parking brake.
- Turn on hazard lights.
- Display the Triangle.
2. Gather Tools
Get your spare tyre, jack, and lug wrench.
3. Loosen Lug Nuts
Use the lug wrench to loosen (but do not remove) the lug nuts on the flat tyre.
4. Jack Up the Car
- Position the jack under the car at the specified jacking point.
- Raise the car with the jack just enough to lift the flat tyre off the ground.
5. Remove Lug Nuts and Flat Tyre
- Completely remove the lug nuts and set them aside.
- Take the flat tyre off the wheel hub.
6. Install Spare Tyre
Place the spare tyre onto the wheel hub.
7. Attach the Lug Nuts
Hand-tighten the lug nuts onto the wheel bolts to secure the spare tyre.
8. Lower the Car
Carefully lower the car with the jack until it is on the ground.
9. Tighten Lug Nuts
Use the lug wrench to tighten the lug nuts in a star or crisscross pattern until snug.
10. Check Spare Tyre Pressure
Make sure the spare tyre is properly inflated.
Additionally, what are Run-Flat Tyres?
Run-flat tyres (RFT) are engineered to enable you to maintain control of your car and ensure its safety in the event of a tyre puncture or a loss of tyre pressure. There is no abrupt deflation. Instead, you can continue driving at a reduced speed at a maximum speed up to 80 km/h without compromising safety.
